I have just submitted these ideas for a commission at Salford Quays.
The first proposal is Compass Clock. It selects a destination around the world, latitude, longitude and then gives you the distance in nautical miles, journey time and types of cargos.
It also has seating, lights and sound. Materials; stainless steel, copper and mosaic.

The second proposal is Tug. This is a 5m high, half scale end section of a tug. Galvanised mild steel hull. Inside there are timber seats and a ceiling screen with projections of all the different boats shipping that used salford docks.

LIGHTNING CLOCK, NORTH SHIELDS

In this 30’ high clock copper spheres are supported by a stainless steel ‘lightning strike’ like a giant Van der Graph Generator, which comes out of a cast iron explosion at the base. On the hour a small figure pulls a lever which activates the clock, the wind face slowly appears from the large sphere blowing smoke onto the figure. The force of the wind blows the figure horizontally but he manages to hold onto the lever. As the wind abates everything returns to normal. At the base of the column meteorological instruments give full weather information.

ACCRINGTON CLOCK, Co designed with Ali Wood.

A 22′ high clock column and anodised globe of the world topped by father time on his bike. He wakes the hour and is carried into the air by a pair of cherubs in a cloud. The world spins and opens, revealing a band of devils playing ‘ Rock Around the Clock’. Co-designed with Ali Wood.

Commissioned by Town and City Properties in 1987.

LOOKOUT, WORKINGTON

Lookout is a new space designed by Andy Plant as part of the redevelopment of Workington town centre. The design features an interactive mechanical clock, a clock face inlaid into the new paving scheme and seating which incorporates sound and light. The clock is based on a ‘camera obscura’ and it tells the time with its rotating minute hand suspended above head height parallel to the ground. The minutes are shown on the ground and the hour on a central ring above the main sphere

THE WOOLF (IN SHEEPS CLOTHING) WOLVERHAMPTON ART GALLERY

A clock for a grade 1 listed building which is to be hidden on the entrance balcony. Bleating sounds come from the front of the building (several sequenced speakers around the frontage). A mist oozes out from the balcony. Slowly a running sheep rises up, all is not what it seems. The sheep splits open, oozing more smoke and light, and a grinning wolf appears. He takes a bow and retires.

THE WATER CLOCK, COVENT GARDEN

The first commission for a large scale outdoor clock, this was co-designed with Tim Hunkin. Water flows from the roof animating chiming bells and gardeners with watering cans. Flowers grow from the window box/shop signage as it is filled by water.

Commissioned by Neals Yard, Covent Garden, in 1981.

TIDE & TIME, LIGHTHOUSE, POOLE CENTER FOR THE ARTS
Tide and time is a speaking, nautical clock.The etched zinc clock face is the admiralty chart of Poole harbour.

The second hand, a neon light sweeps over the face like a radar. The hour hand shows the actual hight of the tide, receiving a transmitted signal from the coast.

The clock selects stories on the hour and half hour by a combination of the hight of the tide and the position of the hour hand. The stories are placed around the chart like buried treasure.

Commisioned by Poole center for the arts in 2003

This was the other proposal for Workington. “Lookout ” was chosen, but I have always like this design.
It is a growing / nurturing machine, an animated garden of plants that is cared for every hour by it’s host clock. The whole structure revolves once an hour so the red arrow is the minute hand and points to the time on the floor.

THE NEWPORT CLOCK Animation

A 30’ high stainless steel triumphal arch built to represent Newport at the Welsh Garden Festival and which now has its permanent home in Newport town centre. The feature is a cross between a cuckoo clock and an expresso machine, it has been billed as the only ‘white knuckle’ clock in the world. Skeletons appear, smoke oozes from the cracks, several tons of steel fall apart and come to rest revealing the inhabitants asleep , a band of angel mechanics. A cuckoo wakes them, they start to rewind the clock weight, and the whole structure reforms itself ready for the next hour.
